Laying down a big poker hand

Fixation - Definition: an unhealthy and compulsive preoccupation with something or someone. (Dictionary. com)

Fixation happens. I’ve seen players with pocket aces not notice that someone at the table has possibly received a flush on the flop. After the river, they confidently flip over their aces only to realize they have lost the hand.

I have got caught in the act of not laying down a big hand. I was in a tournament at Catfish Bend Casino in Iowa and was dealt pocket Queen’s. I wasn’t paying enough attention to the other players at the table and went “All In” before the flop. Had I been paying attention and simply made a small bet instead of going all in, I would have noticed that the posture of one of the other players had changed. He leaned forward and placed his hands differently on the table. I realized later that this signified he had a good hand. He ended up beating my pocket Queen’s with pocket King’s. It’s very rare but it happens. Thankfully, I was able to buy back into the tournament at that point and ended the tournament in 5th place.

Knowing when to lay down a big hand is part of playing quality poker. Being able to read the other players at the table and determine what hands they will typically play will give you this edge. It also relies on your ability to estimate the cards that the other players have as well as the cards that will likely come on the flop, turn and river. This is estimated through probability. See my article “Its all about the cards,” for more information about this subject.

I was watching a poker tournament on TV and it was heads up play. The TV did not show the cards they were playing with. Simply by watching the way one of the players was acting (he was unsure) and the cards in the flop, it told me he had a low pocket pair. My father asked me to guess what he had and I said pocket nines. I was right on the money.

I’ve also prevented myself from losing a hand as well. I had determined that one of my opponents had pair their 10 on the flop and the other I wasn’t concerned about because of their previous betting pattern. I had paired my 9 on the flop and I was able to determine after I saw the turn that he had a pair of 10’s. The only reason I knew this is because I watched how he played and how he bet in hands that I wasn’t playing. I subsequently folded the hand and he beat the other player by showing his pair of 10’s.

Overall if you do not become fixated on your hand and pay attention to the whole table, you will become a more successful poker player. Poker is not only about the cards you have in your hand, but it is also about being able to confidently determine, through probability and psychology, that you have the best hand. Good luck!

Ice climbing techniques

Mountain climbing locations vary in altitude but many of them are in of sub zero temperatures. There are different techniques required for climbing in ice covered terrain and it’s much different than climbing in dry terrain. While it is more challenging than other forms of climbing, ice climbing can be the most rewarding and exhilarating.

Many techniques that are used in other types of climbing are used in ice climbing but the challenge is altogether different. There are definite differences in the equipment used for ice climbing. For example, ice climbing boots require more insulation than for alpine climbing since it’s important to keep ice and snow from entering the boot.

Spiked soles that clamp to the soles of your boots, called crampons are required for keeping traction on the ice. There are special techniques used for trekking on ice. Using a large ice pick, you use an overhead swing to penetrate the ice in front of you. When you’ve determined it’s secure, you kick your crampon fitted boot into the ice. Once you are sure you’re secure these two steps are repeated.

While hiking and climbing, a pro is used much like in traditional climbing but the protective devices used in ice climbing take on a different aspect. Single, twin and double rope ascents are still used but ice screws are commonly used. Ice screws are hollow tubes that have teeth on one end and a hook on the other end. They’re placed and secured into the ice and the hook on the ice screw is for attaching to.

The ice itself is sometimes used as a pro. There are two common methods; the V-thread and the Bollard method. In the V-thread method, a pair of holes are drilled diagonally into the ice and their holes connect to make a “V” shape. A sling is threaded and then attached to a rope and harness. The ice is quite strong and there is little risk of giving way. With the Bollard method a rope hold is carved into the ice and a rope is looped over the piece of ice. The ice is strong enough to hold one or two climbers depending on their weight. There is a risk to using ice as a pro since it is an unpredictable medium but many climbers prefer it.

Ice climbing utilizes many of the same techniques as traditional climbing but with some different equipment. Many climbers find that ice climber is more adventures and provides them with a more rewarding feeling. If you’re a climber, you should give ice climbing a try for a true adrenaline rush.

Zen and the art of playing golf

Good golfers are always 'in' the game, especially before each and every shot.

While to the onlookers, this may seem effortless, but there is so much going on in the mind of a golfer.

This reminds of a scene in The Legend of Baggera Vance, where Bobby Jones steps up to the ball, to tee off. Will Smith tells Matt Demon to look at Jone's eyes, and tells him to observe how he looks at the field. He concentrates, takes his position, takes his practice swings, his mind and body in rhythm. The result is nearly perfect as a drive should be.

This point of view may be far fetched and some may even object to it, but many will find some truth in the statement - Golf is a Zen experience. This is true for all golfers who are good at it, no matter how much they joke around and be goofing off.

Zen is exactly this - being present physically and mentally in each and every moment at all times. As some people call this living life to its fullest, but this feeling is different. Zen is experiencing energy in every moment of life. It's a feeling of living life to the fullest and appreciating every moment for what is given.

So can we then call Golf, a Zen Experience?

Let’s see...

Zen coincides with Golf in all aspects of the game. When the heart and soul is in the moment, a golfer takes notice of everything around themselves. The player feels the breeze, recognizing its force and direction, but effortlessly. Then they notice the feel of the grass as they walk down the fairway, but they are still not under pressure to be thinking about their shot.

The player will then note the distance to the green, the weather conditions and select appropriate club.

The player will focus on only one thing that the next shot and nothing else, but again without the pressure of thinking about it.

The pressure to perform makes the player tense and this spoils the shot. On the other hand a Zen golfer would be calm and would trust his or her body. Once the mind and body are in sync, and then make the shot.

He is aware that his shot may not be perfect always, as the golfer would have intended. The difference would be in the attitude. For a Zen golfer, a bad or imperfect shot will not affect him at all and he would get ready for the next. But this will definitely adversely affect others, who stress over every shot.

Non-Zen golfer would get bogged down and keep thinking and cursing. These negative thoughts would affect his entire body language and will feel defeated even before the result. Since the body and mind are not in harmony, the entire game after the bad shot will get affected; this would be followed by another bad shot. Any good shot will be looked upon as an accident, luck or a fluke.

Win roulette - easy tips to maximize your profits

Roulette.

Round and round and round she goes, and where she stops, nobody knows.

Growing up, I always loved roulette. It was something that fascinated me -- watching the ball spin around and around and around, and knowing that if it landed in the right slot, there was a lot of money that could be made.

Of course, when I got older and I went into a casino for the first time, I discovered that it was a whole lot harder to make money at it than I had thought, at first. Luckily, I'm a pretty fast learner and I quickly found a way that I could minimize my losses and maximize my profits.

Well, times change and suddenly, I find myself spending time at online casinos, and playing online roulette.

Guess what?

You can use the same strategies that will help you minimize your losses and maximize your profits with online roulette.

Now, before you get all excited, I've got to put in a disclaimer here. Some casinos are better than others and I'm only going to be discussing the good casinos, which you can find located at the end of this article.

One of the benefits to playing at one of the good online casinos is that they want to get you to try their site and they'll give you some really nice incentives. What kind of nice incentives?

FREE MONEY.

That's right -- you log on, you sign up, and you get some really great offers. Some of them will match your initial deposit with double and sometimes triple what you're bringing to the table. Now, I don't know about you but I sure like the sound of that.

Okay, so you find a good online casino and you want to play roulette.

Do you have a strategy?

If you don't, I can give you some pointers right now that will help you out.

First of all, keep in mind that there are the odds are always the same -- no matter what. You might spin the wheel a thousand times and not have the number "15" come up but that doesn't mean that you're "due" for it to show up. (If you go into a real casino, you'll see some casinos actually give out little cards for you to keep track of the numbers -- because they want you to pick numbers that haven't come up in a while, even though those numbers are no more likely to show up than any other.)

Now, here's a little trick that I've learned through the years, playing both online and real-world casinos.

First, you want to figure out how much you're prepared to lose -- in my case, I'll start off with $100 as my loss figure.

Then, you want to have a "win" number -- how much you want to win before you walk away from the table. I usually make it half how much I can afford to lose. So that means that I'll usually have $50 as my "walk-away" number.

Next, you'll want to bet 10 percent of your money on either red or black.

Now, keep in mind that casinos (online and real-world) always have a slight advantage. However, when you play what's known as "rock solid," you make the odds work in your favor.

The way that this works is to basically make sure that you stay the course. Instead of jumping back and forth between red and black, there are many professional players who constantly play one color -- no matter what.

What they're doing is playing the odds -- which are random. At times, they're down slightly and other times, they're up slightly. With a little bit of common sense and a "feel" for the various tables, there are players out there who are doing extremely well.

Of course, I'm not an idiot and neither are you. So whenever I gamble, I make sure that I'm not gambling more than I can afford to lose -- and I make sure that I never get in over my head.

Lowering the risk of high school football injuries

Football is a dangerous sport. Players endure bruising contact, long practices in hot weather and all sorts of unusual stresses and strains on their muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is not possible to prevent injuries in the game of football and for this reason many parents are hesitant to allow their children to participate. But the risk of injury can be minimized with cooperation between parents, doctors and coaches.

When your child comes to you and asks to try out for football, your answer should always be contingent on the results of a full medical checkup. Be sure that the doctor knows that it is a sports physical so that he or she can check for the appropriate things like joint flexibility and heart health. After your child is cleared medically, then you can move on to investigating the program and learning what safety measures are provided.

One of the most important facets of avoiding injury in any sport is maintaining proper conditioning through exercise and good nutrition. Ask your child's potential coach how conditioning is handled. Year-round conditioning is ideal, but barring that, children should participate in appropriate conditioning programs for at least six weeks prior to the beginning of regular practices. Ask whether the coach is responsible for conditioning or if the program has a trainer that works with children.

Dehydration is a critical issue among football players since practices typically occur outdoors during the hottest part of the summer. Ask the coach what measures are taken to prevent dehydration. Know that fluid breaks should be taken about every 45 minutes and players should be allowed to drink all they want in order to keep properly hydrated. Also ask whether the coach, trainers or other personnel are certified in CPR.

Wearing protective equipment is a given, but you need to work with the coach to ensure that it fits properly. Whether or not the program requires it, your child should wear a mouth guard. Mouth guards are instrumental in preventing dental injuries and can protect against jaw and certain types of head injuries as well.

Ask what medical staff will be on hand during practices and games should an injury occur. To prepare for the worst-case scenario, consider giving the coach or trainer an emergency health care authorization letter. This letter will allow your child to be transported and treated at a hospital even if you are not there to give permission.

Casino games for female gamblers

The ‘average’ online casino player is female, aged between 46 and 55.

The reason why is obvious, when you think about it – for years, land based casinos were male-dominated spaces where women, if they were allowed in at all, were seen as either waitresses, glammed-up escorts to ‘serious’ gamblers or blue-haired pensioners piling coins into slots.

With the advent of online gambling, that all changed. Now, women can gamble where and when they like, without the pressure – real or imagined – of feeling like an unwelcome outsider.

Surprisingly, though, the online casino industry has been relatively slow in picking up the opportunities offered by this demographic. Most of those online gambling sites that do focus on female gamblers tend to assume that all they want to do is play bingo and chat on online message boards.

Whilst there’s no doubt that many female gamblers enjoy those aspects of online casinos, there’s an entire group who are interested in more traditional casino games.

If you’re one of those gamblers, and you feel a little neglected by the marketing of casino sites, this article is intended to point you towards games I know you’ll enjoy!

First up is probably the most male-dominated game of all, Baccarat (pronounced Back-a-rah and also known as Punto Banco) As the game that introduced James Bond to the world in Casino Royale, it has always had an aura of class and glamour. Think of Bond girls in strapless black dresses, draped over the players as they gamble, and you’ll see how women are generally regarded by Baccarat players!

In traditional bricks-and-mortar casinos, Baccarat is often played in a separate room, out of the way of the ‘rowdier’ tables, as it is the game preferred by ‘high-rollers’, those high stakes players that get treated so well by the management. This is another reason why land-based Baccarat can feel so intimidating, for men as well as women.

Online, however, there are no such restrictions to playing Baccarat. Gone are the trappings of glamour and secrecy – and what’s left is a straightforward, enjoyable card game, with room for a little strategy.

I designed Fortune Palace (see resource box) to introduce players to game such as Baccarat. If you visit, you’ll see all the rules and bets clearly explained, an explanation of strategy for all levels of risk – and, best of all, you’ll be able to practice absolutely free, so you won’t need to chance any money until you’re familiar with the game.

The second game I’d like to recommend is one of my personal favourites – Sic Bo. Not many know of this game as it’s played mainly by Asian and Far Eastern gamblers. In fact, a lot of Western casinos fail to offer the game. Online, though, it’s one of the most popular table games.

Unusually, Sic Bo is widely regarded as a ‘game for women’ amongst gamblers. This disparaging attitude ignores the possibilities that the game has to offer. To describe it briefly, it’s a game played with three dice that has similarities with Craps and Roulette. I’m always amazed by how Roulette players look ‘down their nose’ at Sic Bo. True, the odds in Sic Bo are not exactly the most favourable in the casino, but it’s not as if Roulette is a guaranteed money maker! In fact, if you’re looking to try out a strategy on a close-to-evens chance bet like Red/Black, Sic Bo offers a very similar bet in Big/Small.

But that’s missing the point. The fun in Sic Bo lies in the betting permutations and combinations. Basically, there are 216 ways that three dice can be rolled – and you can place any number of bets on these possible outcomes. For example, you could bet on the overall total, on a pair, on a triple, on a specific number – the possibilities are numerous.

The way the board is laid out, the way the dice are rolled, and the way the results are presented all go towards the excitement and enjoyment of the game. For some fun in the casino, I think Sic Bo’s unbeatable.

Blackjack is a very popular game and it’s unlikely that you’re unfamiliar with it so I won’t go into detail in this article. All I will say is that I’ve devised a simple 3-stage strategy for Blackjack that is intended to take players from beginner to high-roller whilst still keeping the enjoyment in the game. If you’re a Blackjack player – or would like to be! – you might care to check it out.

Another unusual game we describe at Fortune Palace is Pai Gow Poker. This is a game I like to describe as Blackjack for Poker players. In other words, you need a basic knowledge of poker hands (don’t worry – Fortune Palace has a hand ranking chart for beginners!) but the game itself is a you-versus-the-dealer kind of game.

You’re dealt seven cards and you have to make two poker-based hands, one of five cards and one of two. The dealer does the same – if both your hands beat the dealer’s, you win!

It’s fast and exciting and a game that I know is very popular with female visitors to the site. The strategy can seem complex at first, but once you’re familiar with it it’s a game you can really get into.

A variation of the game is Bonus Pai Gow Poker. In that version, you can place a side bet that your seven cards will contain a significant poker hand (eg full house, straight). The advantage of this bet is that you win the wager even if you don’t win the two hands ie you get the bonus regardless of how you set your hands! If you’re lucky enough to get a Royal Flush, the bonus pays out a massive 8,000 to 1!

Sadly, not all online casinos offer the Bonus version. But if you’re playing at one that does (eg Spin Palace or Ruby Fortune) it’s worth checking out.

Roulette is possibly the most popular and familiar of all casino games. As with Blackjack, I’m sure you know most of what you need to know about Roulette, so I won’t go into detail here. But if you’re attracted by one of the many Roulette ‘systems’ available on the market, at Fortune Palace we’ve tested the most popular ones and give you our verdict. I won’t tell you here which work and which don’t – that would spoil the surprise!

The last game I’d like to introduce you to is Keno. True, this is a game similar to Bingo, which may seem to contradict the initial point of this article, but I feel it’s a game female players may enjoy. Put simply, it’s a cross between Bingo and Lotto, where you have an element of control over how many and which numbers you choose.

You mark the numbers on a card and then 20 balls are drawn at random. You win depending on how many ‘spots’ you choose and how many of those come up. Winning small amounts is relatively easy – winning big is relatively hard! But if you’re lucky enough to get 10 from 10, the payout is 100,000 to 1.

Keno is more of a ‘fun’ game than many others, but it has its charms and offers a diversion when you’re looking to relax between hands of more ‘serious’ games.

Overall, then, I hope this article has given female players a taste of the kind of games that are available to them and will encourage some to try their hand at online gambling.

Remember, in the past, casinos were a male preserve. Online casinos have made things much more democratic – everyone’s welcome and everyone’s treated equally.

Women have a right to play where and when they want – make sure you exercise that right!

Calvin johnson 2007 draft day picks

Born on September 25, 1985 in Tyrone, Georgia, Calvin Johnson has grown into one of the best college football wide receivers of all time. His rare combination of speed, size, strength, and athletic ability make him difficult to guard no matter who is lining up opposite him. Johnson stands 6 foot 5 inches tall, and weighs close to 240 pounds. To go along with this he has 4.3 speed, and a vertical leap of more than 47 inches!

Johnson started his football career at Sandy Creek High School. As a senior he put up average numbers, but not anything that would blow you away. During his senior season Johnson pulled in 40 balls totaling 736 yards. He added a modest eight touchdowns on top of this. His career high school numbers were 80 catches for 1,479 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Despite not having the best stats among high school receivers, college coaches came from all over to see what Johnson had to offer. Of course, the main reason for this was his huge upside potential. During his senior year he was pegged as one of the top 10 players in the entire country, as well as one of the best in the state of Georgia. This led to a highly contested recruiting war which was eventually won by the Georgia Institute of Technology, or Georgia Tech as it is also known.

During his time at Georgia Tech Johnson made a name for himself. In fact, many people believe he is the best receiver to ever play at the school; and that is saying a lot considering the players who have come before him. In three seasons as a wide receiver at Georgia Tech, Johnson totaled 2,927 yards on 178 receptions. He also contributed 28 touchdowns.

After losing to the West Virginia University Mountaineers in the 2007 Toyota Gator Bowl, Johnson declared himself eligible for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Steve prefontaine biography

Steve Prefontaine was born January 25, 1951 in the small town of Coos Bay, Oregon. His father Raymond was a capenter and his mother Elfriede was a seamstress from Germany. Steve Prefontaine was a typical high school boy and wanted to play football and the traditional sports. Prefontaine though was too small for these sports and decided to run.

Steve Prefontaine started his running career at Marshfield High School and became one the most sought after runners in the United States. He was undefeated in cross country and track his junior and senior year. Pre was very versatile and could run a 1:54 800 meter to a 13:52 5000 meter race. His senior year at Marshfield High School he set the American record in the two mile run.

Coach Bill Bowerman of the University of Oregon took notice of Pre’s talent and recruited him heavily. The fall of 1969 Steve Prefontaine showed up on campus and ran cross country in the fall. By the time he finished his career at Oregon University he won an impressive seven NCAA national titles: three in cross country, 1970, 1971, and 1973 and four in the three-mile in track, ‘70, ‘71 ‘72 and ‘73. Steve Prefontaine was also the first athlete to win four consecutive NCAA track titles in the same event. He also held eight collegiate records including the 3 mile and 6 mile races in which have not been broken.

Steve Prefontaine continued on with running career and made the 1972 Olympic team in the 5000 meter run. He ran a gutsy race and led most of the last mile, but ended up 4th, one place out of the medals. Pre was an icon in Oregon and people would fill the seats at Hayward Field to watch Steve run. He never lost a race at Hayward field and graced the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. His fans would cheer from him at the mere site of him. Before it was said and done Steve Prefontaine he broke his own or other American records 14 different times.

Steve Prefontaine was also involved with his community. He volunteered at Roosevelt Junior High School and started a running club at the Oregon State Prison. He often corresponded with many of the inmates to give them hope. He was very outspoken how the Amateur Athletic Association (AAU) treated the amateur athletes. If it were not for him track and field athletes of today would not be in the bargaining position they are in.

Steve Prefontaine died on May 30, 1975 driving home from a track meet he put on earlier that day. He had just set the American record in the 5000 meter race and his MG convertible sports car hit a rock and overturned killing him. Pre was only 24 years old. The news of his death shocked the running community world wide.

Steve Prefontaine’s legacy will live on forever. There have been two movies about his life and there is a track meet held in his honor every year. The Prefontaine Classic is held Hayward field featuring some of the best track and field athletes of the world. High and college runners keep his memory alive by posting some of his famous quotes on there shirts. As long as there is track and field Steve Prefontaine will always be remembered.

Mbt sneakers

Did you ever see that episode of Seinfeld where George is playing basketball with Jimmy, the guy selling the freaky-looking training shoes? Ladies and gentlemen, MBT sneakers may not turn you into someone who refers to yourself in the third person and can dunk a basketball better than Dr. J., but they do promise significant improvement in performance.

Advertised as “the world’s smallest gym,” MBT sneakers take the philosophy that typical shoes don’t reflect the actual world we walk in. While the world is dishearteningly uneven, most shoes are flatter than Calista Flockhart. What the MBT sneakers attempt to do is improve one’s coordination and strength so that in turn the stress on the joints and spine can be lessened.

The MBT in MBT sneakers stands for Masai Barefoot Technology. The Masai, in case you weren’t aware, are a tribe in Africa who walk everywhere on either completely bare feet or the barest of sandals. If you’ve ever seen members of this tribe walk, you’ll also quickly notice they are the very model of the term “spring in his step.” Great posture and a graceful, loping stride are what the Masai have naturally and what the makers of the MBT sneakers hope to instill in its customers.

The core idea behind the design is to create an environment in which walking seems to be more of a smoothly continuous motion rather than one made up of repeated shocks to the system. Although being sold as a weight-loss or fitness product, the makers insist that the shoes aren’t just for the athletic. Indeed, everyone can benefit from these shoes. Everyone except those who already have perfect posture, anyway.

It the whole idea seems a little hazy, really the best way to understand it is simply to see them. Much like those oddly designed shoes from Seinfeld, the MBT sneaker is first and foremost a fashion statement; they don’t look like anything else on the market. They feature almost no heel contact with ground, instead placing the entire load upon the front of the shoe, which is what gives wearers that certain Masai spring.

If you check out any of the web sites that sell MBT sneakers, chances are you’ll be treated to little videos that show people walking and exercising in them. These videos are much more descriptive than all the words in the world and you’ll leave these sites either desperately wanting to try them on or laughing at them the way Jerry laughed at Kramer when he was wearing the training shoes on Seinfeld. Chances are it will be the former. They just look so darn comfortable.

Like everything else that promises to improve your lifestyle and health, of course, there’s a price tag attached. Be prepared. MBT sneakers are not cheap, and by not cheap I mean they are jaw-droppingly expensive. At least for most folks. But, hey, if you’ve got slightly less than $250 burning a hole in your pocket and you want to walk like a Masai warrior, then MBT sneakers are a no-brainer. For the rest of us, it’s a decision.

Playing games with an airsoft paintball gun

Although you should never play with any type of gun an airsoft paintball gun can change the way you play survival games such as paintball. Imagine creeping through the forest with nothing but your airsoft paintball gun and safety goggles to protect you from the vicious onslaught of the other side. You are ducking and weaving like a professional, half out of urgency because the last thing you need it to get pegged with a pellet and half out of expertise because you have the wide-eyed enthusiasm of a professional officer of paintball fame and glory on your side. You calmly duck behind a tree, ready and waiting for the perfect moment to strike. The excitement makes your heart skip a beat and you hope no one can hear your heavy breathing.

Perhaps you’re using an M16 version of an airsoft paintball gun or perhaps it is the classic AK 47 version. Regardless, you are certainly locked and loaded as you wait for your targets to scramble out from behind their covering subterfuge. Your heart is pounding and your eyes are wide and ready for battle. You can almost smell your enemy and yet you do not want to pounce too soon or you will lose it all. You’ve gained some ground, hiding behind this last vestibule of neutral territory, and you’re on the verge of breaking in to the enemy base and freeing your captain with your airsoft paintball gun.

The Last Stand

You emerge finally ready to face the enemy on your own with your firing power from the airsoft paintball gun. You have the scope primed and start targeting the enemy in blue as you see them scramble over a hill at the sight of your presence. With the prowess and skill of a master sniper, you start picking off the enemy as they run foolishly with their backs to you. You emerge slightly from the tree, firing away and nailing one by one of the blue shirts with your vicious repeat fire from the automatic airsoft paintball gun. Once you have emptied the paintballs from the chamber, you duck back behind the log to reload.

Ready and anxious, you step out from the log and stand. Nobody appears to be around and you smile to yourself, thinking you have taken care of business once and for all. With one final breath, you prepare to stalk over the hill and check your opponent’s last fortress of solitude before they mount a final stand. You take a step forward, hearing a twig crack, and experiencing the sudden sting of pain as a paintball (a red one) sizzles out of an airsoft paintball gun and plants on you squarely in the chest. You’re hit. The pain that you feel is not really relevant to the disappointment of getting caught. Now its time for lunch and then its round two!

Skateboarding a fun alternative solution

Some kids just don't seem to get into team sports. For one reason or another, children may shy away from the conventional recreational activities offered today, such as basketball or baseball. While some parents frown at the idea of their children not doing the same activities as they did growing up, neglecting your child's physical activity due to a disinterest in common sports is a terrible idea. It's important to ensure that you're child gets their exercise - exercise is important to the health of both the body and the mind.

To that end, many parents have been realizing that their children can boost their self esteem and engage in intense physical activity through skateboarding. It's a common choice for those who don't prefer team sports - it offers your child the opportunity to make goals and then commit to them, causing them to be proud. Many parents shy away from the alternative sport due to the prospect of injury their child faces; we've all seen the videos on TV of kids breaking their arm or leg while attempting a skateboard stunt. However, when properly performed, skateboarding can actually offer a lessened chance of injury over the common team sports that society encourages. Through the use of proper safety equipment and a sufficient understanding of the patience required by the sport, your child may end up with a few bumps and bruises, but it can really pay off when it comes to how they feel about themselves and the world.

Also, the ‘rebel' aspect of skateboarding has taken a bit of a backseat in our modern world. There are skateparks popping up across the nation, offering children a safe place to grow in their love of the sport. Plus, your child's social dynamic can really blossom when they're learning new tricks with new friends at the local skatepark. All in all, skateboarding provides a pretty complete solution to the needs of an adolescent. With Tony Hawk being one of the most recognizable faces on the planet, skateboarding has truly left its mark in the youth culture of today, and parents should learn about the benefits that the sport can have before condemning it and telling their child that they will break their neck. It can be more beneficial than you know.

Why does it take so long to get a black belt in karate

Many of you reading this article may already be well on your way to becoming a black belt in your chosen martial art. Some of you may just be starting out on your journey and others may have reached the coveted black belt and are now working towards higher degrees of the black belt.

How long were you told it should take you to get the black belt? Two years? Three years? Five? Ten? Why does it take so long to get a black belt? This article will help to answer your questions.

In general, it takes about 3 to 5 years to get your black belt in most legitimate martial arts. This timeframe can be shortened or lengthened based on several factors such as your commitment to your training, your overall technical ability, your ability to learn and digest new material, and other factors.

Is three to five years a long time? It depends on how you look at it. If you practice karate twice a week for one hour each session then in three years you will have only done 312 hours of karate practice. That does not sound like a lot of time spent on becoming a black belt over a three-year time span.

Looking at it differently if you practice karate twice a week for 1 Ð… hours each session then after four years you will have done 624 hours of karate practice – twice as much as the first example but only one more year of training. This kind of schedule seems to be more acceptable.

The next thing to consider is the curriculum specific to your style of martial arts. If we look at the art of Shotokan Karate as an example, by the time you are black belt you should have a high level of knowledge of about 20 to 25 major techniques that account for your basic punches, blocks, kicks and strikes, about 10 different forms (kata) and 5 major types of sparring drills. These include multiple set defenses that should be memorized and practiced until they become second nature.

These are just the main requirements for the black belt and this does not include some of the additional content that is practiced on the way to black belt. When you put this information into the context of the suggested timeframe above you can probably now see why getting a black belt takes a considerable commitment of time and effort.

Getting a black belt is not intended to be easy. The black belt is an esteemed symbol of a person’s technical skill and martial arts knowledge and is something to be proud of achieving. Ultimately, the time it takes to get your black belt should not be your primary concern. Your focus should center on improving your karate skills and on improving yourself as a person. By doing this it will only be a matter of time before you reach your desired black belt goal and it will not matter to you whether it takes 3 years or 6 years. All that will matter is that you accomplished your goal!

How can nfl fans support their favorite team

There are many ways that an NFL fan can support their favorite football team. Loyalty is a good place to start. Loyalty means making sure to attend or watch very single game that the team plays. It also means loving your team unconditionally and standing by them no matter what. Whether they win the Super Bowl or fail to win any games during the entire season, you’re always there, rooting for them.

Promoting your favorite NFL team is also a great way to show support. This can be achieved in a number of ways. The most popular and customary way is by wearing team-related gear. This is an excellent way of promoting the football team of your choice. When you go out donning the team material, others see it and may become motivated to watch a game, attend a game in person, or even go out and buy some of the same or similar gear for themselves. They may even become inspired to read more about the team or the National Football League in general, after looking at your team-related merchandise.

Finding the appropriate gear isn’t difficult at all. There are many sporting goods stores and countless websites that carry a wide variety of sports-related paraphernalia to choose from. One excellent site that sells everything that you may possibly need is link as per attached below, and they even offer great money-saving coupons.

There are numerous types of NFL gear to choose from: hats, sweatshirts, t-shirts, socks, jerseys, shorts, pants, and many more items. If a fan doesn’t want to only buy gear, there are countless other NFL-related items to choose from. This list includes but is not limited to: Clocks, watches, blankets, towels, license plate frames, checkbooks, and much more. Almost any object you can think of can be bought with your favorite football team’s logo on it. It may take a little creative searching, but any item can be found.

Many sites and stores are quite eager to cater to their customers, and this means that they will do almost anything to keep their customers happy. If it means ordering a special size of a certain item because a customer is exceptionally large or small, they will be more than happy to do it, but for an additional charge, or course.

It isn’t hard to support your favorite NFL team. All you need is a little creativity and a lot of loyalty.

Soccer practice drills

Practice is the key to success in soccer and if you look at most of the top players in today’s game, they’re people who work hard for the skills they show on the pitch, often taking training to levels beyond the team’s sessions.

David Beckham said that he spent (and probably still spends) several hours per week beyond training, practicing his brilliant free kicks. Juninho Pernambucano, one of today’s best long range snipers practices shots after hours, from various ranges. And don’t think that Ronaldinho or Cristiano Ronaldo’s superb dribbling skills were all obtained during team practice, they’re also the result of long hours spent with the ball outside of the normal program.

So if you’re striving to better yourself and become a quality soccer player, it’s mandatory that you practice using soccer drills, either individually, pairing up with a teammate, or with a group of friends or teammates. I’ve prepared 3 fun soccer practice drills for each of these setups, hopefully you’ll find them useful in your training plan.

1. Soccer Drill for Individual Practice – Juggling

Juggling the ball may not have any accurate use in a match, because you’ll rarely (if ever) find yourself the space, time and need to juggle a ball more than twice during a game. However, soccer juggling affects a lot of other base soccer skills and it’s also one of the easiest and fun soccer practice drills to try out individually.

Soccer juggling affects your ball control ability, since by constantly keeping the ball in the air, you get to naturally understand how hard or soft the ball needs to be hit in order to control it. In-game, this affects your ability to stop and receive balls, as well as your dribbling skills, which often rely on how well you judge the strength and timing of your touch.

Other skills that soccer juggling has a positive effect on include balance, concentration and the ability to control the ball with both feet. Of all soccer drills for individual practice, juggling has the most benefic effects, so it’s well worth saving up a few minutes every day to juggle, either after practice, or even in your back yard.

2. Soccer Practice Drills for Pairs – One on One Dribbling

One on one dribbles work especially well when practiced in a pair. During a match, there will be countless occasions where you’ll need to take on an opponent one by one and the only way to practice this is with the help of a friend or a teammate.

It’s best if your training pair plays on a complementary position, as in someone that you would usually have to dribble against in a match. If you’re an attacker or offensive midfielder, you’ll want to practice one on ones with a defender, or defensive midfielder. Same concept goes the other way around.

It could also be a good idea to switch sides every now and then. After you play the attacker and try to get the ball past your pair, switch positions so that you’re the defender and he has the ball. This allows you to develop your attacking and defensive skills as you practice.

Also, in order to make this soccer practice drills more fun, you could keep a score. Whenever the attacker passes the ball past the defender, he gets a point. If the defender takes the ball away or stops the attack, he gets a point. Whoever reaches 10 points wins and you get to switch sides and start over.

3. Soccer Practice Drills for Groups – One Touch Passing

If you can find 3 or more teammates to get this soccer practice drill going, it will soon work out wonders to your passing, ball control and agility skills during matches. Here’s how it works (I’ll assume you have 5 more teammates to work with):

Split yourselves into 2 groups of 3, aligned face to face at a distance of a few yards. Group A starts, with the first player in the line passing the ball to the first player in Group B. After delivering the pass, the first player in Group A moves to the back of the line. The player in Group B receives the ball and one-touches it back to what should now be the second player in Group A and then moves to the back of his own line.

Do this as fast as possible and as accurate as possible, without needing more than one touch. You can play with different distances between the groups and once you get accustomed to the system, you can try passing the ball in mid-air, without allowing it to touch the ball and without the need for a stop. This is harder, as the passes need to be more accurate in order for the soccer practice drill to work.

Looking for hot and funky maternity clothes

Before, pregnant women go through a style crisis the moment they get pregnant because most department stores did not carry any maternity clothes or if there was any it was only a small collection whose designs were utterly hideous. Lucky were those girls who had the benefit of being able to sew their own maternity clothes or perhaps who had friends or family who could design some for them. But even so, the fabrics and the outdated designs were still somewhat unflattering for the pregnant woman who is supposed to be at her most beautiful and best when expecting a child.

For the entire nine month pregnancy period, these women had to wear polyester pants and floral tops. But not for the pregnant women of today who are given a wide array of choices when it comes to maternity wear to keep them looking hot and funky even with their baby bumps.

The fashion industry has realized the market and the need of these pregnant women who still desire to be stylish and fashionable even with their delicate condition. These hot mommas don't let a few extra pounds suppress their sense of style when it comes to fashion.

Long gone are the days when mommies are frumpy in outdated outfits. Today's expectant mothers are keeping themselves updated and are keeping pace with the latest trends to hit the fashion scene. With the huge availability of stylish and trendy maternity clothes available, entering motherhood is so much more appealing as you get to maintain looking beautiful and attractive while keeping away feelings of depression.

From casual clothes, work outfits, sleep wear and even lingerie the choices are endless for today's expecting mothers. Online shopping has even made shopping for pregnant women more convenient without the necessity for them to be on their feet when looking and selecting for maternity clothes. But still they could opt to shop in person with the abundance of stores and boutiques catered specially for pregnant women. There are also discount outlets and shops that offer used maternity clothes for expecting mothers who are on a tight budget.

Women going through motherhood have a vast array of choices when it comes to maternity wear. Pregnant women no longer have to worry about wearing oversized clothes that do not in any way give them shape or are not cut to give them form and figure.

Pregnancy has its challenges but with stylish and fashionable maternity wear, facing those challenges makes it more rewarding.

How to dominate your fantasy racing league

Fantasy football has been extremely popular for years and the Internet has increased the popularity of fantasy sports in general to all time highs. One of the fastest growing fantasy sports is fantasy racing. The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series has exploded in popularity over the past two decades selling out all race events and grabbing huge chunks of the TV ratings. And that, in turn, has increased the popularity of fantasy racing leagues.

There are a wide variety of fantasy racing leagues to choose from. Just like football, you can find a local office pool where you choose a driver or two each week to more sophisticated leagues that involve multi-million dollar salary caps and point systems. Some fantasy racing leagues are free and others charge a fee to participate. Contestants battle it out for bragging rights to thousands of dollars in cash and prizes.

Some consider fantasy sports games of chance but if you ask those that participate and win and finish near the top of their league(s) consistently, you will learn that fantasy sports are Games of Skill. You need to study and stay up to date on all aspects of the sport your fantasy league is based on.

For fantasy racing leagues based on the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, you need to study and chart how each driver and his team perform at each track. NASCAR is a team sport, a driver alone cannot win a race. If a driver changed teams during the off season, this may impact his performance. There are 36 races on 23 different race tracks and over 50 drivers to choose from so your notes can get quite extensive.

Wallbanger Fantasy Racing offers a helpful cheat sheet that you can individually chart drivers with. I suggest you print one and then make copies or you can come up with your own system. If you want to dominate your league, you will need 23 pages (one page for each track) for each driver you chart. You will also need a folder or binder to stay organized.

You may be asking where do I start?!? Here are some of the things that may factor in to which driver you choose at a certain race track:

Some Driver Factors you need to keep records of include:

-- How does this driver perform on short tracks like Martinsville and Loudon?

-- How does this driver perform on flat ovals like Indy and Phoenix?

-- How does this driver perform on super speedways such as Atlanta and Charlotte?

-- How does this driver performance on restrictor plate tracks? (Daytona and Talladega)

-- How does this driver perform on a Road Course?

-- Does this driver have recent multiple wins at a specific track?

-- Has the driver ever raced at this track? (Busch or Nextel Cup Series)

-- Did the driver participate in Saturday's race?

-- What is the drivers average finish at this track?

-- What is the drivers average finish this season?

-- Does your driver have teammates? How many? Do they work well together?

-- How well do the Driver and Crew Chief communicate?

-- How well does the Pit Crew perform?

-- Is the driver happy with his team?

-- Does this driver get good fuel mileage?

-- Does this driver occasionally make a mental mistake?

-- Does this driver usually hit something or get caught up in a wreck?

-- Is the driver aggressive?

-- Where is your driver in the standings? Close to a bubble spot?

Some Race Day Factors include:

-- The drivers starting position

-- The drivers location on Pit Road

-- The drivers health status (sick or injured)

-- Happy Hour speed

-- Happy Hour or Practice crash

-- Day or Night Race

-- Pre race engine change

Some Track Factors include:

-- Surface (Concrete or Asphalt)

-- Banking (Flat, Average, High Banked)

-- Track Configuration: Oval, Road Course, Other

-- Restrictor Plate Required?

-- Has a certain make of vehicle dominated this track?

-- Is gas mileage usually a factor here?

Please remember that this is racing. "Rubbing is racing" and accidents WILL happen. Your driver may get collected in "The Big One" or may simply blow a tire going into turn 3, that will happen but not as often to those that study make smart choices on race day.

The bottom line is that if you take notes and study the sport and its participants, you will finish more consistently near the top of your fantasy league standings week after week. This will ultimately land you a championship and a chance at winning some big and sometimes profitable prizes. Find more information on fantasy racing at race4cash. com

Rc toys as gifts

The holidays is fast approaching and this year, what have you prepared for your loved ones? Or, have you prepared anything at all? A great gift idea for your boys or your boyfriend this coming holidays is a toy. Yes, you read it right - a toy. But it isn't just some fancy toy that can easily break or the type that doesn't guaranty absolute fun. If you are up to the idea of making your loved one happy while giving them something they can take full responsibility over; why not give them a RC car?

Any model of RC toy is fine. In fact, aside from the RC car, there are also other RC models such as trucks, boats, planes and buggies that may appeal to the interest of the person who will receive your gift. What else is good about choosing a remote-controlled toy is that you can choose the color and the entire look of the model you have want. This usually applies to the RTR models or also known as the models that are ready-to-run. These are great for beginners as well since there's no need for additional tweaking.

If you think that the receiver of the gift is going to enjoy assembling or tweaking the parts of a RC car (or whatever model you have chosen); go ahead and by the customizable one. The only step that is needed when you prefer the model which needs assembling is whether there is a need for you to buy the radio control system separately.

Other things that are important when buying RC vehicles as gifts is the location where the owner is going to run it. Is it going to be a rocky surface? A lawn? Or is it going to be a flat and cemented surface? Make sure that the model you buy is also going to suit the surface it's going to run on to avoid immediate damage.

Above all, it's the thought that counts together with your gift. Be there by the time you give your gift and enjoy it together.

Confused about what model and type of brand you want to get for your little boy? When you are a RC hobbyist, you would know the best things that will suffice in keeping and maintaining a RC car or toy. But not everyone is familiar with the specifications of a RC car, truck, plane or buggy. If you are not, don't be surprised to get an envy face from your partner because one fact about RC toys is that, it is addicting to little boys, which also brings the same level of delight to adult boys.

Which reference should you use so you can decide what RC type is appropriate for the person whom you will give it to? You can take advantage of online websites that are purely concentrated on RC toys. You may get a very broad review of the features and specifications of RC vehicles in general. But, a good way to start your search is for you to list down the things that you would like to get. Once you have found the model or type that has your specifications, then you can next check for the price.

Keep an eye for online websites which may recommend RC models which have already been paid for. A second look of the important things that you really need can be found on online reviews. Websites that conduct reviews for different products are those that are already tested and proven and usually getting positive feedback from experts and long-term hobbyists.

If the purpose of buying a RC car, truck, boat, plane or buggy is for leisure only, you may opt for the assembled ones. Choosing your desired color is also possible. There is no need to choose the gas-powered RC vehicles if you think that your kid or your partner doesn't have any intentions in doing so. If ever racing becomes a possibility in the future, that's the time you may accept ideas of upgrading or customizing the purchased RC vehicle to suit racing capacity. But for now, enjoy the experience of running a RC car with your loved one.

Cave hiking basics what you should know about safe hiking

Cave hiking is considered to be an extreme sport in some circles. However, extreme sport tends to mean that the people who participate have little regard for safety and that is not true with cave hiking. Cave hiking is a recreational sport that is quite challenging and requires skills of varying levels depending on the type of cave you’re exploring.

When you go cave hiking, you need equipment to help you navigate the cave. The sport is physically demanding but fun and rewarding. It is similar to mountain climbing and diving in terms of the physical demand required and the rush you get from accomplishing it. Throughout the world there are many caves that you can explore, especially in the larger countries like the United States.

While cave hiking is not extremely popular, the athletes that do participate in the sport find it quite exciting and different from other sports. There are thousands of caves that can be explored and there are still many that have not yet been explored. If you are new to cave hiking, you should hire a guide to go with you to make sure that you have a safe trip that is enjoyable – the trip stops being fun when you are trapped in a cave and you don’t have the right equipment.

Safety is paramount in cave hiking and there is equipment you need:

LED lights: When you are cave hiking, you should have a few different light sources to help you see in the dark caves. Ideally, you will have a LED headlamp, which is a popular choice of equipment with cave hikers. LED headlamps offer you a light source without needing to use your hands. It points in the direction your head is pointed, which is usually where you are headed and need light the most. You will also want to have a LED flashlight with you to shine into other spaces, tight spaces or into a different direction. LED lanterns offer a lot of light and are great for lighting up an entire cave. You will want to use LED lights because they offer you a longer battery life and longer bulb life. LED lights are the most recommended lights for caving. Always have two light sources with you when cave hiking for extra safety.

Knife: You will need to carry some type of survival knife with you as well while you are cave hiking, such as a Swiss Army knife or hunting knife. A survival knife is paramount in case you need to cut ropes or vines, etc. while in the cave. It also may be needed if you have to mark your direction in the ground or rock.

Other equipment: Items like ropes, helmets, carabineers, hiking boots, water and food are additional items you will want to carry with you when cave hiking. It is best to check with a guide or take a course with a guide on what is the appropriate equipment and attire for the particular area you will be hiking. Don’t cave hike on your own until you have done so with a proper guide.

Always remember – safety first. Tell someone that you are going hiking, when you are entering the cave, where it is located and when you expect to return. This is to ensure that if something goes wrong and you don’t return on time, someone knows where to begin the search. Always ensure that if you are new to the area or new to the cave that you take a guide with you who is experienced in that area and cave. This will ensure that you are safe throughout the hike and that you have fun.
