Learning to breathe your way to health

Living a 9-5 existence in the office plus the constant demands at home puts even the most positive person under considerable stress and anxiety. At the office, a typical career executive or a rank-and-file employee would have to juggle between one task to another. Often under time pressure, office workers try to beat the clock and turn in quality outputs every single day. Just imagine the hustle and bustle that goes on at the floor of the stock market at nine o' clock in the morning on a busy Monday. Try to think of the hassles encountered by a kindergarten teacher that is in charge of at least 10 four and five-year olds. Or try to even begin what a day is like for an emergency room doctor in a crime-ridden inner city hospital.

Coping with anxiety is not a phrase or term that is supposed to be heard only from yoga practitioners or peaceniks. In fact, every single person in the world today must learn to develop this life skill. Dealing with stress on an daily basis is called a life skill because of the enormous impact that pressures at work and at home have on our mental, physical, and emotional health. Overcoming depression is now seen not just as a form of emotional fortitude but a capability much like being able lift a set of barbells. Getting rid of the blues is a form of intellectual and emotional strength that must be developed by people through conscious and constant practice.

But how does a person actually strengthen his or her emotional core? Aside from having a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and rest, and being generally positive about life --- people should start to breathe correctly. Yes, proper breathing should be learned. So many people actually go through life without knowing how to properly breathe. Breathing is supposed to be a very natural action that can be done without thought. Still, many fail to get enough oxygen and do not get the relaxation that should come from proper breathing.

So, how does one breathe properly?

Many Eastern meditation techniques prescribe the proper form of breathing. Aside from maintaining a straight yet perfectly relaxed body, it is also important to learn how to breathe in deeply and inhale in such a way that the stomach expands as a result of the intake of air. Exhalation, on the other hand, must lead to the deflation of the stomach. The correct breathing pattern does not cause tension on one's shoulders or rib cage. Dr. Mehmet Oz, a medical doctor and frequent guest in the Oprah Show, had this to say about proper breathing:

“If you're inhaling with your rib cage, you are not taking in air as much as you could if you inhale with your diaphragm. When you exhale, you should allow your diaphragm muscle to move up to push the air out.”

While some people who are diagnosed with certain emotional or psychological disorders may need to take anxiety medication it has been established through research that those who breathe properly through regular meditation experience a higher level of emotional stability than those who do not practice good breathing techniques.

So, instead of fretting all day long, we can all try to go back to the basics of how to put in more air into our system. Air is life and proper breathing is definitely the way to have more of it.

Being overweight is a learned habit not a choice

It is remarkable to find how many people eat out of boredom, sheer habit, or to the accompaniment of a newspaper, a book, or a heated business discussion. Many succumb to the habit of eating at a "minute" diner, fast food restaurant or lunch counter, gulping their food and running a "hoof and mouth" race with Father Time. (He always wins.)

Others are trained from childhood to stuff themselves—"finish your plate” (An old relic of primitive days when food scarcities or the uncertainties of a next meal or a next day were constantly present). Some call this "scavenger eating;" many children acquire this habit by imitating their parents who are imitating their parents who may have been raised under food scarcity circumstances.

Many men and women are the victims of monotony or plain poor cooking in their meals. They rarely vary the selection and choice of foods out of sheer inertia, indifference, or lack of attention. So they try to make up in quantity what they lack in quality, seeking satisfaction from calories instead of from quality and contrast.

Dr. Arthur Master, in a study of a group of patients not suffering from heart disease, found that a significant loss of weight was followed by an average 35 per cent reduction in the work the heart has to do. The lesson to you is clear: Even though your heart is strong, being overweight taxes it with work and strain beyond its normal capacity. A healthy heart is gradually weakened by the extra stress imposed on it by 20, 30 or 40 pounds of unnecessary fat.

Your energy reserves are depleted; you feel tired too soon and too often, even when doing simple things like walking and swimming, things that the person of normal weight can handle with ease and pleasure. Don't let too much weight rob you of a strong heart and the vibrant energy that you need to enjoy a full, healthy life. Learn to count your calories and you can count on more years of healthy, happy living.

We must remember that in the past 50-100 years there has been a considerable reduction in energy expenditure, because of a more mechanized way of life. People today don't have to go out to the barn and hitch up a horse or team or count on a long walk when they are ready to go somewhere. They merely step into their car, which is as close to the front door as they can manage it, and then drive to their destination, again parking as near the entrance as possible.

The introduction of countless labor-saving devices in our home, factories, and

offices has also robbed us of most of the physical exertion our grandparents and great-grandparents knew. In fact, when it comes to conserving energy, we seem to have approached about as near as we can get to a vegetable existence.

The message is clear; we must break our old bad habits and develop new good ones if we want to lose weight. Making healthier food choices whenever possible, watching our portions at mealtime, and getting in some exercise regularly are paramount if we want to keep our weight down and live a long, healthy, happy life.

Using cheap medicines to cure sports injuries

Athletes and fitness buffs have one thing in common. These individuals are prone to injuries that could hamper their health and fitness goals. Sports injuries are, to a certain degree, hard to prevent especially if an athlete is engaged in a tough contact sport like basketball, football, or martial arts. Whether one is a professional, a weekend warrior, or a die-hard fitness enthusiast --- athletes of all shapes, skills, and sizes are vulnerable to pain and injury.

Here are the body parts that are most prone to injury during training or competition:

Knee – Stiff and swollen joints make it difficult to do any bending. It usually feels worse the the morning or after a long period of inactivity. Long distance runners and cyclists often complain of knee pain.

Shoulder – This part of the body is particular stiff and painful either due to inactivity or over-exertion. Any kind of overuse can stress the shoulder joint or rotator cuffs. Muscles can be strained and tendons can become inflamed. Injuries to the shoulder are common among basketball and tennis players.

Shin — Shin splints is are an example of overuse injury, which means that they usually occur when individuals push their legs too hard or too long. This is common among marathoners.

Back – Stiffness, muscle spasm, and pain. Lower back pain is very common in peple who improperly carrying or lift heavy loads especially in sports like powerlifting, bodybuilding, and mountaineering.

Feet - Tingling, burning, numbness or pain under the heel are felt by athletes who sustain a foot injury. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is the foot version of the carpal tunnel syndrome, and is common with people who are flat footed.

Ankle — The most common ankle injuries is caused by stretching and tearing of the ligaments that surrounds this particular joint. Most sports pose a certain degree of risk for ankle injury. This is more prevalent among athletes who compete in judo, jiujitsu, Graeco-Roman wrestling, and other martial sports.

In addition to injuries in these body parts, “ strains” and muscle cramps are additional sports-related ailments that can be encountered by physically active individuals. A strain is a condition where the muscle is stretched beyond its maximum length resulting in injury. Cramps, on the other hand are involuntary and painful contractions of muscles or a group of muscles. Muscle cramps may vary in intensity and can cause a slight twitch or severe pain.

The development of sports injuries can be prevented by engaging in proper training regimens like warming up, stretching, and cooling down. Activities like warming up and stretching are essential in training because it prepares the body for sternuous activities that maybe encountered during training. It may also promote improved blood flow and aid in muscle recovery. Cooling down is also important because it allows the body to slowly switch from exercise mode to non-exercise mode. Depending on the intensity of exercise this activity may inlcude lower intensities of slow jog or walk.

So what can the top-class and budding athlete do to prevent being sidetracked by injuries?

This ailment should not be a cause of concern because with the right tools like cheap medicines and other pain relievers. and safety precautions these ailments can be treated and be back to normal in no time. Understanding these injuries is essential in lessening their occurrence.

If these training adjustments don't work, taking some acetaminophen, aspirin, other non-sterioidal anti-inflammatory drugs and other cheap medicines may also be helpful in pain relief and recovery. Understanding proper training regimens coupled with healthy diets is essential in lessening the development of injuries that may hamper one's fitness goals. Lastly, individuals who experience chronic pain with unknown origin should seek medical assistance because this may mean something more serious.

Understanding the notion of borderline autism

The concept of autism can sometimes be very confusing. The syndrome first explained by Austrian psychiatrist Leo Kanner in the 40’s has generated many controversial opinions throughout the course of history. Autism is a very complex neurological disorder that can lead to different forms of behavioral, communicational, social and cognitive impairment. People with autism rarely fit the standard symptomatic profile introduced by medical scientists in the past. In fact, the syndrome generates a very wide spectrum of symptoms that can be experienced on multiple levels and at various intensities.

In most cases, the criteria of diagnosis introduced by Rutter and other scientists may be enough to identify some categories of autistic children. However, some children may only present some characteristics of autism, showing no other signs of the disorder. Contemporary medical scientists have argued many times whether it is appropriate to consider this category of children autistic or not. Patients who partially fit the autistic profile could be referred to as “borderline”. The concept of borderline autism is very common these days and it generally includes patients who show clear signs of abnormality but they only reveal some symptoms of Kanner’s syndrome. In the past, many children with borderline autism were inappropriately diagnosed with psychosis or schizophrenia.

Patients who don’t fit the exact profile of autism but present certain signs of the syndrome might nowadays be diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Due to their common features, Asperger’s Syndrome and Kanner’s Syndrome were considered to be the same concept. Many scientists believed that Asperger’s Syndrome described a milder form of autism, while others completely failed to distinguish between them. In fact, the syndrome discovered by Asperger described patients who didn’t fit the exact pattern of autism and hence, it could be referred to as a form of “borderline autism”. Asperger’s Syndrome revealed how difficult it was to draw the line between autistic and normal children, proving that it was possible for patients to have only certain characteristics of autism.

As Asperger’s theories became popular, many children that have been previously diagnosed with “mild” autism were now considered to suffer from Asperger’s Syndrome. Children with Asperger’s Syndrome seemed more responsive to external stimuli and presented less preoccupation to sameness. Children with Asperger’s Syndrome also seemed to have higher levels of performance intelligence and better communicational skills. Unlike autistic children, who hardly made any progress as they reached more advanced stages of development, some children diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome could be partially recovered in early childhood. With the help of specific medical treatments and with the means of appropriate educational programs, most children with Asperger’s Syndrome showed signs of improvement on both behavioral and communicational levels.

Nowadays, most patients diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome can be successfully integrated into the society and they can even live their lives independently. As adults, many patients with Asperger’s Syndrome have proved to be very responsible and socially aware, showing few signs of neurological impairment.

How to choose the right wrestling shoes

A Quick History Lesson About The Sport of Wrestling

Wrestling is the world's oldest sport. Evidence of wrestling can be traced all the way back to ancient Egyptian times. The first Olympic wrestling match was recorded in 708 BC. The earliest form of wrestling proved to be a violent contest between two combatants. But much of the brutality was eliminated as the Romans introduced a less violent version of the sport. Wrestling remained popular throughout the Middle Ages in countries such as England, France, and Japan.

Wrestling continued to increase in popularity as it found its way to America

by way of the early colonists. The sport was also quite popular among Native Americans. The “catch-as-catch-can“ style finally developed into the modern form of collegiate wrestling today.

The first national wrestling tournament took place in New York City in 1988. The first modern day Olympic Wrestling Match was held in 1904 in Saint Louis, Missouri. The first NCAA Wrestling Championships were held in 1912 in Ames, Iowa.

Some Important Considerations When Purchasing Wrestling Shoes

Finding The Correct Size

The first thing you should do is measure your foot to determine your normal shoe size. A typical pair of wrestling shoes will generally run one half to one full size larger than your normal shoes. Keep in mind that your new wrestling shoes will probably stretch somewhat after a few practices. Remember, the fit should be fairly snug.

Brand Selection

When shopping for wrestling shoes, you can rely on “battle tested brands” such as Asics, Nike, Adidas, Infinity, and Brute. You can purchase these popular brand name shoes online or at typical “brick and mortar” stores. A good quality-wrestling shoe will normally last a year or two. It all depends on how much you wrestle. Keep in mind that comfort is extremely important. Look for a shoe that features a good rubber sole and high ankle support. The higher quality wrestling shoes are made out of a lightweight material that breathes well. It is recommended that you try on several different brands to find the one best suited for you. Don’t hesitate to ask the salesperson for help. If you are still not sure which shoe to purchase, try to get a recommendation from your coach or your teammates.

Color and Style

Many manufacturers offer a wide selection of colors to choose from. Select a color that agrees with you and goes well with your other equipment.

Choose either a split sole or a non-split sole shoe. Split sole shoes tend to be a little more comfortable and provide better traction.

Price

Wrestling shoes generally range in price from $30.00 up to $125.00. It is recommended that you purchase a more affordable style if you are new to the sport. If you are operating on a really tight budget, you may want to consider purchasing a used pair. You might even try to strike a deal on a used pair of shoes with one of your teammates. The Internet is also a good place to locate and purchase used wrestling equipment.

Some Key Points To Remember…

Your wrestling shoes must have a nice snug fit to them. Make sure that you have selected a pair, which features a strong sole and high ankle support.

Pain relief for newborn babies

A group of neonatologists - Peter Gray and his colleagues examined 212 Australian hospitals in which 200 or more babies a year are delivered about their knowledge and use of techniques that bring pain-relief for minor procedures in infants born at term or near term.

Dr Gray of Mater Mother’s Hospital in Brisbane declared that inspite of good evidence that giving infants a breast milk or a sucrose (a sugar solution) during procedures could lessen or deaden the pain, they were not commonly used in Australian hospitals.

“We were surprised, given the wealth of information that’s available. Newborn babies in Australia, certainly the vast majority, are not being given any .” - Gray said.

The scientists discovered that before taking blood from babies, only 11 per cent of units used sucrose, 24 per cent gave breast feeding and 10 per cent used breast milk in order to relieve pain.

According to researchers, the results concerned procedures that were common in babies who routinely get a hepatitis B injection and the heel prick screening test before leaving hospital.

“One might say: ‘Oh well, what’s one injection or one blood test?. And indeed that may be a valid statement” - Dr Gray noticed.

“But other babies might have a number of tests for jaundice or they might have an infection and need blood taken for other reasons as well. Indeed, there’s some evidence now that past experiences of pain have been associated with altered brain development and behavioural problems in older children. We really need to address this issue and to minimise the pain. I’m not saying that giving sucrose or putting the baby to the breast will abolish the pain altogether - but it certainly will minimise it and this has to be good.” - Gray expressed.

The study appeared recently in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health.

The researchers obtained the information in a telephone interview with the most senior persons from special care nurseries or the maternity units.

Dr Gray emphasized that the scientists found significant differences between states, with few hospitals in Tasmania, Queensland and South Australia giving pain relief to infants having blood taken.

“The awareness and use of Pain relief in Western Australia, NSW and Victoria was probably the highest and the other states didn’t so well” - he stated.

Last October, The Royal Australasian College of Physicians brought out guidelines for doctors managing pain in children. The guideline include a 24 page section on newborn babies.

Preventing medication errors in radiological services

With over 300 million radiological procedures performed in the U. S. each year and "X-ray" and "MRI" now household terms, a trip to radiological services may seem trivial to many people. However, don't take these visits lightly. There is a high percentage of harmful medication errors associated with visiting such diagnostic and treatment centers.

In fact, the percentage of harmful medication errors reported in radiological services is seven times higher than many other types of medication errors, according to the 2004 MEDMARX® Data Report of medication errors published by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).

Are You At Risk?

So, how does a simple X-ray put you at risk? First, radiological services are not just about performing X-rays anymore. These services have grown to include the cardiac catheterization laboratory and nuclear medicine as well as diagnostic tests such as lung scans and MRIs. Radiology staff also drain abscesses, insert gastric feeding tubes and open blood vessels (angioplasties). These are all complicated procedures and 20 percent involve the use of a radiological pharmaceutical, a drug used to create contrast in the body that is detectable by imaging devices.

In addition, there can be a breakdown in the "continuity of care" when a patient goes to radiology.

Patients often circulate through this area without adequate communication between radiology staff and the providers who have been caring for them.

The Good News

Fortunately, consumers can take steps to help prevent harmful medication errors during visits to radiological services.

1. Always keep an up-to-date list of all your medications and dietary supplements in your wallet.

2. Inform radiological services staff and your health care providers of all your allergies.

3. When you are moved within the hospital, ask where you're going and why.

4. When you go to radiological services, make sure your medical chart goes with you.

5. For outpatients, make sure you understand the home preparation instructions for your procedure. If you don't understand, call your health care provider.

6. Have a family member or friend in the hospital with you to be your advocate for quality care.

Inform radiological services staff of all your allergies.

Fantastic methods to sleep like a baby

There are people who are in drastic need of sleep but just can’t seem to will their bodies to go to dreamland. They toss and turn until the sheets come off their beds, and they get the bitter realization that counting sheep doesn’t actually work.

Insomnia doesn’t just mean not being able to sleep a wink. It also means waking up lots of times during the night, or getting the feeling that you didn’t get a good night’s sleep, or waking up too early in the morning and not being able to get back to sleep.

Almost half of America’s population suffers from insomnia, and practically everyone has experienced it at least once in their lifetime. Some suffer this disorder for years. Insomnia is something you have to be concerned about because it greatly affects your life and those around you.

It makes you cranky and moody, makes you lose your concentration, and in effect makes you lose friends. It could also weaken your immune system, making you more vulnerable to illnesses. So if you’re suffering from sleep deprivation, you’ve got to take steps to cure it ASAP.

You’ve got to diagnose what kind of insomnia you’re suffering from. You don’t need a doctor to do this for you. You can do it yourself.

Insomnia is caused by a lot of factors.

Psychological factors include depression, sadness, or anything that gives you negative feelings. These may arise from traumatic events that you couldn’t get out of your mind (like embarrassing incidents, financial problems, or death of a loved one). Stress, anxiety, excitement, and nervousness may contribute to insomnia.

Physical impediments may also cause insomnia. You have to see your doctor to determine if you’re suffering from any illness. Heart problems or medication may cause sleeplessness.

The food that you intake may also be a factor contributing to insomnia. Don’t take anything that has caffeine in it. This includes coffee, chocolate, and tea. Check the food you eat and trash those that contain caffeine. The same goes with alcohol and nicotine. Like caffeine, these are stimulants that help to keep your mind awake. Alcohol does help induce sleep, but it doesn’t give you a GOOD night’s sleep because of certain compounds it contains that keep some organs (like your stomach) active.

Don’t engage in any exercise too close to bedtime because it increases heart rate, akin to making you excited, and in effect making you unable to fall asleep.

Make sure that everything is nice and quiet by the time you get to bed. Find a bed that you’re comfortable sleeping in. Turn out the lights to help you sleep better.

Stop looking at that clock! You will get stressed out if you do, and it could keep you awake even longer. It would be better if the clock is nowhere near your bed. If you need an alarm clock, turn its face away from you.

Some people actually find some sounds to be helpful in lulling them to sleep. A droning sound that goes on and on, like the whirring of the electric fan or the air conditioner, can help filter out irritating sounds like the noise of horns honking in the night.

Set your room to a temperature that makes you comfortable enough to fall asleep.

Decide on your sleeping schedule and stick with it. Even if you have work and it entails different shifts, stick to a schedule that you could follow most of the time.

Don’t take too many naps because it reduces the likelihood of you falling asleep right away at night.

Don’t keep on complaining about not being able to sleep. It just makes you stressed out. Relax. Have a nice warm bath to relax and soothe your body. Try herbal remedies. You could also attend therapy sessions that help relax your body, like meditation. Sex is another great cure. The main purpose is for you to relax enough to fall asleep.

These are some tips to get rid of insomnia. You shouldn’t ignore the consequences brought about by insomnia because it produces stress and negatively affects your health. Try out these methods, and have pleasant dreams!

Is society embracing self-destruction

You don't have to be suicidal or depressed to be a threat to yourself. Sometimes, as performance anxiety or status anxiety pushes us to do more and be more, we lead ourselves down a dangerous path. Athletes, in particular, are always eager to push themselves to limit to win in highly competitive sports. They often risk what seems like little things, such as knee pain or muscle spasms, just to see if they can raise the level of their game just one notch above their competition. While this is an excellent celebration of the competitive spirit and the human ability to improve one's self, it can also sometimes end up becoming the first step down the spiral of self-destruction.

Some observers have noted that modern civilization, with its intense focus on competition and achieving dominance, has put people and organizations along that downward spiral. No place is self-destructive behavior more prominent than in the arena of sports. In sports such as American football, baseball, and basketball, more and more athletes are coming under fire for taking performance enhancers such as anabolic steroids to enhance their physique and athletic performance. The trouble is that these athletes also develop addictions to muscle relaxants. The intense focus on becoming better and better has driven some to engage in training regimens that their bodies can't handle. Sure, they are capable of ignoring the lower back pain or the attacks of chronic pain in their joints for a while, but it eventually adds up. Observers note that it only gets worse the more exposure an athlete gets, as the media puts even more pressure on them than the sport does.

In the field of entertainment, the self-destruction is not only recorded by the media for all to see but, in some ways, even marketed. The media is constantly pushing people to appear more and more like the waif-like celebrities they admire, subconsciously causing them to follow suit. As the obsession with getting as thin as possible takes hold, everything from weight loss pills to unhealthy fad diets are used and abused by not only the general population, but also the celebrities themselves. Unlike the self-destructive tendencies of athletes, the tendencies present among celebrities stems more from vanity and fashion than the desire to attain a higher level of physical prowess. While it is arguable on whether or not athletes are actually improving themselves with their actions, it is clear that the extreme dieting that the media espouses is unhealthy and fatal.

Ordinary people also seem to be affected by this unusual tendency towards self-destruction, albeit in an entirely different manner. While celebrities and athletes that are on the path of self-destruction tend to be doing it in a physical manner of their own will, most people who are self-destructive are such because of outside factors. The stress and anxiety of work, the pressure to perform both as a member of society and as an individual, and the stress of dealing with the daily paradoxes of life are starting to take more and more tolls from the average person. Statistics show that more and more people are developing a variety of mental health disorders, with depression, bi-polar disorder, and schizophrenia being the most common. Some observers have noted this and have connected it to the nature of modern life, which puts people under such tremendous social, professional, and emotional pressure that the “breaking point” is being crossed more and more often.

While it is highly pessimistic to assume that this self-destruction is as widespread as some claim, it is rather alarming. There are more and more news reports claiming that athletes are engaging in dangerous training regimens and abusing various medications. Celebrities and models are progressively getting thinner and thinner, despite the constant warnings otherwise. In contrast, obesity is at an all-time high among the general population, despite the widespread availability of weight loss pills. Finally driving the issues home is the increasing number of people who have experienced or are experiencing some form of mental health disorder. The situation is not nearly as negative as some put it out to be, but there is a distinct possibility that it is getting there.

Ancient and new ways of getting rid of back pain

It isn't exactly a rare scenario. A man, typically middle-aged, is seen busily working on something inside the house on a Saturday morning. The suddenly, he bends to pick up a tool from the floor. Earlier, he broke into a sweat while carrying sacks of cement and bricks that he'll use to re-do the driveway. As he rises, he immediately senses the sharp pain on his waist and lower back. Not as young as he used to be, he ends up almost immobile from the waist down after hurting his back while doing something as ordinary as picking up an object from the floor. This scene is so common that it is even used as a common device in t. v. situation comedies and cartoons. But in real life, over stretching and lifting of heavy objects have been the reason for the need to buy all sorts of pain medications.

However, it isn't simply manual labor or household mishaps that prompt someone to urgently need back pain relief. The reality is that there are several situations and occupations that have a higher tendency to cause undue stress on the back muscles, which would then necessitate the use of back pain relief treatments. Another possibility would be the natural “wear and tear” associated with aging. As we get older, our muscles slowly become thinner and our bones begin to brittle.

Back pain relief is hardly something that can be considered a specialized field, as most medications that relieve back pain are also used to relieve pain in other parts of the body. In particular, low-potency pain killers and muscle relaxants that target the entire central nervous system are among the most common ways to get back pain relief.

Aside from the Western medicine-style of prescribing pain killers, alternative methods of pain alleviation are now available. Once such alternative is called Acupuncture, the ancient Chinese art of sticking or puncturing the skin with needles for the purpose of restoring health or treating disease and pain. It has been used by the Chinese people as a back pain relief method since the 1340s, predating many Western medical practices on pain alleviation. According to acupuncture theory, illnesses are caused by an imbalance in a person's yin and yang. Through acupuncture, the flow of internal energy or “chi” is regulated, allowing the critical balance of yin and yang to be restored. Regulation of the “chi” also includes the normalization of blood flow and other body fluids. Western medicine has yet to acknowledge acupuncture as a valid scientific treatment. However, recent research involving the use of neuro-imaging technology revealed that acupuncture does influence brain activities.

Aside from the use of needles, other pain killers and muscle relaxants have also been used for many years. Some pain relief medications come in cream and ointment form. Pain-relieving ointments and creams are easily absorbed through the skin above the painful body part. There are also tablets and pills for pain relief that are now readily available in the market.

Whether one chooses Western medical pain alleviation methods such as the use of a pain killer; or if you prefer alternative techniques like Chinese acupuncture --- various ways and means to eliminate back pain will continue to be in high demand. As long as humans remain mortal, back pain --- and back pain relief

products will form part of our every day life.

Yoga and exercise as scoliosis treatments

As defined in medical terminology, scoliosis is characterized as a complex rotational and lateral deformity and curvature of the human spine. This condition may either be classified as idiopathic, a secondary symptom, or congenital.

Causes for some forms of scoliosis are still undefined or unknown. This condition is more adamant among females. Some people often falsely associated scoliosis to bad posture, slouching, and awkward positioning of the body. This condition is also not caused by carrying heavy objects, and it also has nothing to do with a person’s lack of calcium in diet.

Although, it is mostly the adults who experience extreme back pains due to scoliosis, the symptoms and signs for this condition generally worsen during the adolescent years.

The symptoms for scoliosis vary. Persistent back pain does not necessarily confirm one to have scoliosis. Some of the most common signs of this condition are the following:

1. Prominent shoulder blades

2. Uneven level of shoulders and hips

3. Uneven distance between body and arms

4. Clothes do not fit or hang appropriately

The most popular relief treatments for scoliosis condition are surgery and bracing, and the most common treatment is by means of observation. Surgery is recommended to patients with curves that have high degree of progression. It is also a solution for those who experience pain regularly as well as for those who have curves that significantly affect their physiological functions.

On the other hand, bracing is commonly advised among adolescents to further prevent progression of their spinal curves. Braces, however, do not always give the same result. There are instances when patients still undergo surgery even after they were braced. This scoliosis treatment also has several types, depending on the condition of the patient’s curve.

Aside from surgery, bracing, and observation, yoga or exercise is also known to be a great treatment for scoliosis. Performing yoga exercises helps in correcting and easing the pain brought by scoliosis for it thoroughly stretches the body.

Although some experts claim that yoga and exercise have little effect to correct scoliosis, these actually help in avoiding further progression of the spinal curve. These can also reduce the angle of the spinal curvature. Patients with braces are also recommended to perform yoga or exercise, for these help them adapt more quickly to the brace.

Recommended yoga exercises for patients with scoliosis

1. Crocodile Twist scoliosis exercise

The ins and outs of lasik eye surgery

When many hear the word surgery, they automatically think of a lot of pain and possible complications. Is that also what you think about LASIK eye surgery? Think again.

The eye is one of the most sensitive areas of the body, which possibly enhances the fact that many may consider the surgery to be somewhat risky. However, LASIK eye surgery is the safest and most commonly performed method of refractive surgery.

The amount of pain experienced is also minimal. In fact the surgery is performed whilst the patient is awake. The procedure involves the eye firstly being washed out with a solution to numb the area. Clamps are then used to hold the eyelids open in order to perform the surgery without the patient blinking. Once the numbing solution has taken effect, an incision is made in the cornea. Tissue is removed using the laser and the surgeon then closes the incision opening. It's as easy as that, the surgery is complete. The surgery is so simple that many patients will be back working again the following day.

There are thousands of people who have undergone LASIK eye surgery, with the benefits of living life without the dependacy of glasses or contact lenses and an increase in the quality of vision the resulting factor.

As with many surgical operations, LASIK can have complications. The patient may experience double vision, dry eyes, light sensitivity and a few other problems.

The cost of having the surgery can vary for a number of reasons, such as the equipment used for the surgery, and also the testing that is carried out before the procedure. You may find that some surgeries will perform different levels of testing so make sure that you research into what is carried out within the quote of each provider. Also, opt for a surgeon that has experience with the procedure, even if they are slightly more expensive than another surgeon - you can't put a price on your site.

Overall though, LASIK is a safe procedure that is the most commonly performed refractive surgery due to its simplicity and major benefits as a result. It is definately a subject that you should research into further if you are considering having any kind of eye surgery.

The signs of gout and gout symptoms

Gout is a type of arthritis that causes the inflammation of the joints. Gout mostly affects the joints of the lower body (toes, heels, ankles, knees), but it can also affect other joints (elbows, spine, shoulders and hand wrists). The disease can sometimes cause damage to skin and soft tissue (tendons and muscles), which have decreased flexibility and integrity.

The most common gout symptoms are discomfort, sourness, swelling and intense pain of the affected area. In most patients with the disease, the first gout symptoms appear at the level of the big toe. The skin around the affected regions turns yellow, appears to be stretched and bruised. People who suffer from gout usually experience pain attacks that may last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours and in some cases, even days. In most cases, the pain attacks seem to amplify at night and many people with gout have trouble sleeping. The regions affected by gout become very sensitive and people with the disease can’t tolerate clothing or shoes.

Gout is mainly caused by the accumulation of uric acid (waste product that is collected and eliminated by the kidneys through urine) inside the body. The surplus of uric acid tends to crystallize and deposit in different parts of the body. One of the most disturbing gout symptoms is the inflammation of soft tissue. Sometimes, the crystallized uric acid forms tophi, painful lumps under the skin. Sometimes, tophi may even tare up the skin, causing infections.

Gout symptoms can be ameliorated by diet and lifestyle. Keeping a proper diet is a good way of handling the effects of the disease. In some cases, good diets are even more effective in overcoming gout than the actual treatment prescribed for the disease. The treatment of gout usually deals only with local inflammation and pain, and its effects are temporary. Pain episodes and inflammation are known to reoccur even under intense medication. A good diet, however, eases gout symptoms and also minimizes their chances of reappearing. Gout diets consist mainly of low-purine foods that don’t add to the amount of uric acid in the body. By drinking plenty of water you help the kidneys excrete the surplus of uric acid (around two liters of water each day are required).

Gout symptoms also tend to amplify in the case of people who are overweight. Obesity is known to facilitate the accumulation of uric acid inside the body. Also, overweight people that suffer from gout are more exposed to injuries of the joints. It is very important to try losing the extra weight when suffering from gout.

Smoking and the consumption of alcohol are considered to be factors that support and aggravate gout symptoms. Alcohol interferes with the normal renal activity, causing the kidneys to release less uric acid through urine, while smoking seriously damages arteries, affects blood circulation and slows down the process of healing. When suffering from gout, it is very important to reduce these factors of risk, as they only cause damage to the body.

You can look great without spending a fortune

Why do television shows like the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Ambush Makeover, and Style Her Famous become big hits among viewers worldwide? One possible reason for this is that these shows amaze people with the remarkable transformation that happens to people who receive makeovers. These makeovers actually change people's lives, creating a positive impact on their relationships, career, and self-esteem. Loyal viewers of these shows also secretly dream about making dramatic changes in their own lives. Vicariously, they relish in the joys of transformation as they watch ordinary people like them step out to make changes in their physical appearance, emotions, and mindsets.

Still, viewers of these shows cannot help but notice how expensive a makeover can be. A change in hairstyle or wardrobe can cost thousands of dollars. An enormous amount of money is also needed to undergo extensive skin care treatment.

Self-transformation is a somewhat risky proposition. It is not east to get a new hairstyle or shop for a whole new set of wardrobe. But as far as skin care is concerned, most people (especially women) can go no-hold barred. Still, the cost of buying famous and expensive brands, spa treatments, and high-tech skin care treatement solutions can easily run into a couple of hundred, even thousands of dollars. People wishing for skin beauty treatments, however, should not feel hopeless. This is because skin care treatments can already be had in the comforts of one's home, even without spending too much.

Effective skin treatments for less money? Yes, it is possible. Below are some of the common and effective homemade skin care treatment recipes that are very useful for those with limited budgets:

Pimples are usually caused by excess oil and clogged pores. One way to prevent having pimples and getting rid of excess dead skin cells is through a fruit facial. Fruits such as grapes, strawberry and pineapple contain substances that work much like commercial salicylic acid formulas minus the side effects. Make a mixture of these fruits using a blender and apply on the face like a mask. Leave the mixture for 10 to 15 minutes and wash off using lukewarm water right after. In case pimples have already appeared, dabbing a small amount of pure white toothpaste will make it dry faster. Also, eye drops applied on pimples can remove its redness for some time.

Smoother and tighter looking facial skin with smaller pores can result from using toners or astringents. At home, one can use a mixture of two tablespoon pureed berries (strawberries, cherries, cranberries), one tablespoon honey and one tablespoon oatmeal combined in a bowl. Before putting the mixture on the face, wet it first with water then spread the paste evenly allover the forehead, cheeks, jaw and neck. Leave it on for approximately five minutes before rubbing it gently on the areas mentioned earlier. After these steps, wash the mixture off using tepid or lukewarm water. Another instant toner that can be used is ice cubes. Rub it all over the face to tighten pores and increase blood circulation.

Wrinkles are among the most common skin problem among older women. One good home-made skin care treatment for wrinkles is mashed banana. Simply mash or mix bananas in a bowl and apply it on the face. Leave the substance for 15 minutes before washing it off with lukewarm water. Other components that can be used to remove wrinkles are green Thompson seedless grapes and pineapples. Cut the Thompson grapes in half and gently squeeze it at wrinkle lines of the face. Leave the juice for 20 minutes and wash with lukewarm water right after. Also, the core of pineapples can be rubbed on the face as wrinkle treatment. Leave the pineapple fluid for 10 to 15 minutes before washing it off.

Aside from skin care solutions that can be applied directly on the skin, it is also important to have the right substances inside the body that will help keep our skin healthy. We need to eat nutritious food, especially those that are rich in vitamins that have been proven to be good for the skin. Vitamin A helps stimulate skin repair and can be found in eggs, milk, carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach. Vitamin E which helps in the maintenance of body tissues are usually found in whole grains such as wheat, oats, and oily fish such as sardines and mackerel. Leafy green vegetables and nuts are also rich in Vitamin E. Finally, Vitamin C which helps in making the skin firm and wrinkle-free can be obtained from eating citrus fruits such as oranges, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli and cabbage. Increasing the intake of foods rich in these vitamins will surely help protect and beautify the skin.

As cited earlier, effective skin care can be down even at a low cost. Resourcefulness is the key to have a n inexpensive yet real skin transformation. Aside from these fruit-based skin care recipes, it is also important to keep a positive attitude and practice stress relief techniques. For a lasting beautiful skin, a person should not only transform from the outside but also from the inside where real beauty is found.

The day live fast die young started to lose its appeal

Somehow the youthful notion of “live fast, die young!” becomes less appealing as the days go by. Funny that, isn’t it?

I remember the day well, it all started in May 1997 with a routine (or so I thought) Doctors appointment in the morning and then the usual rounds of trying to keep clients and staff happy. It was the day of my thirty ninth birthday and so I was looking forward to the celebratory dinner engagement later that evening. I had been feeling slightly “run down”, a euphemism here for “exhausted” but had put it down to slightly busy times in the office and so had finally relented to my wife’s pleas to “go and see the Doc and get everything checked out”.

Upon my return to the office in mid afternoon, I received a message from one of my colleagues “your doctor called and you are to call him back straight away”. “Ah, get the multivitamins ready and get ready to cut back on the alcohol time” I thought but alas not so.

“How are things Doc?”

“I’m fine but you’re not. I have a hospital bed set aside (he gave me the details of the hospital in question) and you are to get there straight away. I will see you there shortly.”

OK, a little bit harsh and to the point I thought. “Is there any particular reason?” I asked rather glibly.

“Yes, you need a blood transfusion straight away and we will take it from there. I’ll explain more when I see you there”

Things were starting to get a little too serious for my liking. Feeling slightly like a child who had been playing Monopoly and had just received the “Go straight to jail. Do not pass Go and do not collect Ј200 (or whatever your currency is depending on where you are reading this article)” I put the telephone down, stared at the blank wall in front of me and tried not to go into major panic mode.

The day was definitely not going to plan. The next thing was to inform my wife of exactly what had happened (to the best of my knowledge), put the birthday celebrations on hold; cancel the restaurant reservation and trying not to drive into anyone or anything else I headed home to pack some “overnight things” for my short stay in hospital.

“Overnight things!” I had prepared myself for overnight business trips before but somehow I wasn’t too sure whether the hospital would appreciate me arriving with laptop, mobile and modem et al in tow and so things were a little different this time.

The problem as it turned out had been that I had an abnormally low haemoglobin level that had surfaced as part of a routine Blood Test that had been carried out that morning.

The haemoglobin test is normally ordered as a part of the complete blood count (CBC) which is ordered for many different reasons, including as a general health screening. The test is also repeated in patients who have ongoing bleeding problems or chronic anaemia’s or polycythemias.

Normal values in an adult are 12 to 18 grams per decilitre (100 millilitres) of blood. Above-normal haemoglobin levels may be the result of:

• Dehydration,

• Excess production of red blood cells in the bone marrow,

• Severe lung disease, or

• Several other conditions.

Below-normal haemoglobin levels may lead to anaemia that can be the result of:

• iron deficiency or deficiencies in essential vitamins of other elements, such as B12, foliate, B6,

• inherited haemoglobin defects, such as sickle cell anaemia or thalassemias,

• Other inherited defects affecting the red blood cells,

• Cirrhosis of the liver (during which the liver becomes scarred),

• Excessive bleeding,

• Excessive destruction of red blood cells,

• Kidney disease,

• Other chronic illnesses,

• Bone marrow failure or aplastic anaemia, or

• Cancers that affect the bone marrow.

In my case, my haemoglobin count was 5.9 which as my doctor later cheerfully commented “I’ve never seen someone with a blood count that low, still standing!” Just what I wanted to hear I thought as I lay in the hospital bed strapped to a drip getting my transfusion. “Don’t worry, you’ll feel so much better with a few more pints in you and these are the sort that won’t give you a hangover in the morning either!”

Somehow, though grateful for their concern, I found it rather difficult to share their enthusiasm. You see, dear reader, the real problem in the whole proceedings had been with my own rather stupid (it’s a “guy” thing) concept in ignoring the warning signs that had been building up over the years and signing up for a lifetimes course in the “heal thyself” school of medicine.

As a Consultant pointed out rather bluntly at a later stage I had almost killed myself with my own stupidity. I had been losing rather large amounts (at times) of blood during regular bodily functions (I won’t dwell on this too much but you get the drift) but because I had been young and fit had managed to overcome these losses without too much in the way of inconvenience. Also because of my extremely low blood count, to compensate, my blood pressure (though normal at the time) had been kept artificially low.

The moral of the story so far is don’t be stupid, don’t ignore the warning signs and if confronted with anything slightly out of the norm then get it checked out and don’t die of ignorance and shame.

So having received my “Get out of jail free card”, most normal individuals with more than a half functioning brain would have then proceeded through life with caution but sadly it appeared that I was destined to “go for broke next time”.

The complexity of drug abuse

Many people, young and old alike, are hooked on the excitement and escape that drugs seem to offer. In spite of its obvious adverse effects, people continue to fall into the trappings of drug abuse and, in so doing, ruin not only their lives but their loved ones as well.

Curiosity have led most people to try and experiment with controlled substances. Some do it out of peer pressure. Others do it to attract attention, to overcome depression and anxiety problems. There are those who experiment with prescription drugs because they think these drugs can help them lose weight or fit in. But we know what happened to the story of the curious cat. It is important that people realize the great risks involved in drug abuse and its detrimental effects on the mental health and life of drug abusers.

Most people have the wrong notion that those who engage in drug abuse are morally weak. That abusers can just stop and change depending on their attitude and willingness. Drug abuse is like a disease that affects the brain which stimulates addiction, making it difficult for the person to stop it by a mere will power.

It's a good thing that modern medical breakthroughs have now understood the complexity of drug abuse and have come up with treatments and preventions that can help people go back to normal healthy living.

Drugs or medicines are chemicals substances or compounds that are used for the treatment and prevention of diseases and its symptoms. When you swallow a pill or inject drugs into your body, they find their way into your bloodstream and are transported to different parts of your body including the brain. Once it gets to the brain, drugs may either intensify or dull the senses, alter the sense of alertness, and sometimes decrease physical pain.

We all know that drugs or medicines are developed to make us feel better when we are feeling sick. However, most people don't realize that all drugs may have benefits as well as risks. Drugs may cause unwanted side effects and drug interactions which can vary depending upon the kind of drug taken, how much is taken, how often it is used, how quickly it gets to the brain, and what other drugs, food, or substances are taken at the same time. Side effects can also vary based on the differences in body size, shape, and chemistry.

Although most medicines can cure, slow, or prevent diseases that helps people to lead healthier and happier lives, there are also lots of illegal, harmful drugs that people may take to help them feel good or have a good time.

These drugs that can make you feel good at first, can also do a lot of harm to the body and brain the same way alcohol and tobacco cause serious damage to the human body. Prohibited drugs severely impair a person's ability to make healthy choices and decisions. People who drink are more likely to get involved in dangerous situations, such as driving under the influence or having unprotected sex.

Some of the more common drugs are amphetamines, cocaine, ecstasy, nicotine, marijuana, inhalants, cough syrups and alcohol. These drugs are psychologically addictive. Users who try to stop report that they experience various mood problems such as aggression and anxiety and intense cravings for the drugs.

Most of these drugs, directly or indirectly, target the part of the brain that controls movement, emotion, motivation, and feelings of pleasure. Over stimulation produces euphoric effects in response to the drugs. Such reaction produces a pattern that “teaches” people to repeat the behavior of abusing drugs.

The reality is that drugs don't solve any of your problems. They simply hide the feelings of depression and problems. As soon as the effects of the drug wears off, the problems are back again, some may have become worse due to the drug abuse.

Training your dog using a petsafe electric dog fence - week 2

During Phase 2 Your dog can now experience the higher correction levels of the dog fence collar. Walk your dog within the containment area of the yard and praise + feed meat treats to him. Allow your dog to proceed toward the training flags. When your dog enters the signal field, he will experience an uncomfortable, but harmless, static correction. Since this correction may startle your dog, he may jump and yelp. This is normal. Make sure when this happens, you quickly pull your dog back into the containment area. The entire time you will need to have a smile on your face and praise him - make sure to feed a small hot dog bite. Play in the safe area and do not allow your dog to run back to the house. NEVER PULL OR CALL YOUR DOG INTO THE SIGNAL FIELD. Let him decide to enter or stay within the safe area.

You will need to begin to incorporate "set-ups" in your training sessions. A "set-up" is a situation that would normally tempt your dog to leave the yard, such as a person walking by and crossing the boundary, or another pet outside the boundary. These will teach your dog that he needs to pay attention to his whereabouts, regardless of the situation. Until now, the training has not been tested under conditions where your dog has a heightened level of desire. You may begin this training by having a family member walk out of the yard. Your dog should still be on a long leash and wearing his dog fence collar. Remember, DO NOT call your dog out of the boundary!

If your dog refuses to follow the family member, praise him warmly. HE IS LEARNING. If your dog decides to follow the family member, allow him to enter the signal field and receive a correction. Again, your dog may respond by jumping and yelping. Quickly pull him back into the safe area of the yard while smiling and praising on the way. Repeat the process with other "set-ups" such as other pets, a ball, a stick, etc... in various places around the yard. Use something that really excites your pet. Sometimes with dogs that have a high food drive, you can throw some lunch meat or a hot dog just past the flags. This process will cause your dog to make a choice and it is a critical point in his learning process.

If your dog is not responding when he enters the signal field, it is usually due to the dog fence collar being too loose, or his hair is to thick to make good probe to skin contact. If the dog fence collar is fitting properly and your dog does not respond when he enters the signal field, this usually means that the correction level is set too low. Adjust to a higher level. To help adjusting your Petsafe dog collar click here: discount-pet-superstore. com/outdoor/deluxe. htm

Before proceeding to Phase 3, be sure your dog is happy to run and play in the safe area of the yard and is avoiding the training flags, if not, spend an extra day or two on Phase 2.

Running out of batteries

We are more overworked today than ever before despite the rapid advances in technology that supposedly makes our lives easier. The need to earn more in order to maintain a comfortable standard of living has driven more of us to join the rat race, and this necessity is further aggravated by the stresses put on us by our personal lives and problems we encounter at work. Without proper care, the combination of overwork, fatigue and stress will take a toll on our bodies and it will drive us to our breaking point.

Fatigue affects both the physical and mental performance of a person. Because of our hectic lifestyles fatigue can affect the quality of life, productivity and safety. When we reach our breaking point, exhaustion can cause health problems such as high blood pressure, cardiac failure and in some cases even aggravate preexisting conditions. Extensive research has also shown that fatigue can bring deeply rooted negative emotions to surface, causing any number of psychological conditions including depression and other anxiety disorders.

A person who is suffering from excessive fatigue appears to have unusually slow reflexes and/or reduced motor functions. It can also impede their ability to think, react and make decisions, making it especially dangerous for people that with jobs that rely heavily on those functions. Fatigue can double the risk factor for workplace accidents to occur. In order to prevent this, many companies have begun educating their employees about the effects of exhaustion on the human body and teaching them to recognize the symptoms in themselves and in co-workers so help can be sought as soon as possible.

Fatigue can cause a range of emotional, physical, and mental symptoms, as listed below:

*

Having trouble getting up in the morning

*

Feeling run down

*

Muscle spasms

*

Mood swings and/or irritability

*

Loss of appetite or extreme hunger

*

Sore or aching muscles

*

Low motivation

*

Tired for no reason at all

*

Slow or unable to bounce back from an illness

*

Decreased libido

*

Dizziness

There are some lifestyle choices we make that can add up and cause a general feeling of fatigue. Among these are:

*

Too much or lack of sleep - We need about eight hours of sleep per night but sleeping more than 11 hours a day can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness.

*

Lack of exercise - Endorphins, the body's feel good hormone, increase with regular exercise. This can induce a feeling of wellbeing and health, boosting energy levels and decreasing stress.

*

Sleep disturbances - A sleep disturbances may occur if you live in a very noisy neighborhood, having a snoring partner, or are afflicted with any type of sleep disorder.

*

Having a poor diet – Our bodies need to digest a certain amount of nutrients to maintain good health. In fact, vitamin deficiencies can be the root cause of specific illnesses like rickets.

*

Illness and Injuries - A compromised immune system can cause fatigue.

*

Shifting Schedule – Constant disruption of our “body clock” causes sleep disorders and heightens stress levels. Sleeping during the daytime can be difficult because of the person's brain chemicals called neurotransmitters are naturally set to “waking” mode.

*

Workplace Stress - Stress brought on by hard labor, rotating shifts, too hot or too cold working conditions and make you sick.

You can free yourself from fatigue by following these useful tips:

*

Strike a balance between work, play and rest.

*

Exercise and eat right. Limit your consumption of fast food and foods high in salt or sugar.

*

Organize your life and make plans.

*

Prioritize. Putting too much emphasis on little details is not only a waste of time but can also increase your stress levels.

*

Pamper yourself.

*

Try to relax. Practice relaxation techniques that can ease your tension and anxiety.

*

Don't set unattainable goals. Failing to reach unrealistic standards will only add to your stress levels.

*

Conserve your energy as much as possible. Doing unnecessary tasks will only tire you out.

Most importantly, seek medical advice. Ignoring the warning signs will only make your conditions worsen as time passes. Your doctor will be able to prescribe the best possible remedy to combat fatigue, and ensure that it is not just a symptom of some other illness that you are not aware of. Remember that taking care of your body will help you lead a productive and happy life.

Zinc important mineral that has taken the backseat

Zinc is a mineral that is found in almost every cell in the human body, Despite its importance, this mineral is often taken for granted. A lot of people tend to remember zinc when they have a cold or sore throat. These people take zinc supplements and lozenges to treat colds or sore throats. However, these individuals should bear in mind that zinc won't cure these ailments. The mineral, however, will help boost the immune system so the cold won't develop into something more serious. In addition to these health benefits, zinc is found in many food groups and is important for nourishing the skin, boosting the functions of the reproductive system.

Being a naturally occurring element, zinc is found in food such as oysters (one of the highest source of zinc), liver, chicken, turkey, dairy products, and many more. This mineral a significant element in today's diet. However, too little or too high levels of zinc can be harmful. Zinc deficiency can lead to impairment of taste, poor immune system, and skin problems. Other symptoms may include diarrhea, hair loss, fatigue, slowed wound healing, infertility, and decreased growth in infants. High levels of zinc, on the other hand, may cause cramps, anemia, changes in cholesterol levels, loss of libido, impotence, and dizziness. The right levels of zinc may improve brain function and hasten the healing of wounds.

Other benefits of zinc may include:

• It functions as an antioxidant and is involved in carbohydrate metabolism and protein synthesis;

• It is important in the regulation of cell growth, energy metabolism, and regulation of gene transcription ; and

• May help protect the prostate from cancer.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of zinc in individuals is 15 milligrams a day, but recent medical studies show that people can take as much as 40 milligrams a day. Taking zinc supplement is important because medical studies show that this mineral is not stored in the body and people need to take the minimum dose every day. Men need more zinc than women because the male semen contains about 100 times more zinc than what is found in the blood. The more sexually active a man is, the more zinc he will require. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for adults is 1/3 higher than that of women. Recent health reports show that zinc is essential to helping couples address infertility. Zinc dosages of 50 mg a day may result in an increase in semen production and improve fertility. This supplementation is beneficial in conception by affecting the hormone levels in the body.

Despite the importance of zinc, individuals who want to include zinc in their food regimens should seek the advice of doctors and other health professionals before taking zinc supplements. Zinc supplements may help balance the supply of zinc and other important minerals that body may lack. It is important to take the right amounts of supplements and combine them with nutritious diets and exercise. A healthy lifestyle should always be the foundation of good health. Remember to read labels of multivitamins and supplements before taking them. It is important to know the ingredients and quality of medications one is taking. Understanding the benefits of zinc and other vitamins and minerals may lead to improved overall health and happier lives.
